Plastering in Shrewsbury – Top Tips for Painting on New Plaster

When it comes to giving your home a new makeover, painting can be the best part. You‘ve got the plaster on, the final coat is ready to go on. But what now?

If you‘re looking for tips on painting on newly applied plaster then look no further. As professional plasterers in Shrewsbury, we know the top tips for plaster aftercare that will leave your walls in great condition.

Number 1: Patience is Key!

We know that a newly plastered wall may be screaming to be finished off with paint, but picking up the brush too soon may leave you with unwanted marks and patches on the wall.

Plaster will be completely dry when there are no visible dark patches remaining. A few days after plastering is complete, the dark patches will become a light pin =k colour ready to be painted on.

Depending on the room you‘ve just got plastered, the time between plastering and painting may vary by factors such as ventilation, weather, and even room size.

Number 2: Problem Walls

It‘s common for many modern walls these days to be made of plasterboard – simple to paint over and great to work with. Some older walls though can have problems with cracking as time goes on, such as those with lath and plaster.

Dealing with this isn‘t a headache though as some may believe. An all-in-one emulsion base coat will help seal the plaster and fill in cracks that can appear over time.

Number 3: The Root of Moisture

In some cases, moisture will not go away as there may be a deeper underlying cause. If you have brick walls that lay beneath wallpaper then moisture can be hidden from you prior to getting new plaster on the walls.

If moisture in the walls remains then it may be a good idea to get the exterior of your property checked out for things such as greenery and foliage growing against the walls and trapping in moisture. A damp proofing specialist can help solve these issues.

Number 4: Don‘t Contaminate Your Next Paint

When painting plaster, many people let their first pour of paint dry in the tray which can contaminate the next pour and leave unwanted marks on the plaster when painted.

To avoid this, make sure you always empty and clean your paint tray between layers. Alternatively, it is a good idea to place some tin foil in the paint tray which you can then chuck away after each use to save the washing!
