Plasterboard or Wet Plaster? Which Should You Use

If you‘re about to get a a room plastered, then it would be a good question to ask whether you need plasterboard or a wet plaster solution for your project. As a local Shrewsbury plasterer, we know that not all buildings have four even walls! That means that plasterboard isn‘t always an easy option.

Let‘s look at the differences between the two and where one may be more convenient than the other.

Wet Plaster – The Advantages and Disadvantages

Wet plaster is a popular choice for professional plasterers on any job. Plaster can give a long-lasting finish to a wall that‘s durable and smooth. Plaster is also suitable for walls with curves, uneven edges, and irregularities that normal plasterboard wouldn‘t work well with.

Local plasterers also choose plaster as it‘s a much more reliable material than plasterboard, tending to give a tighter air seal and be harder wearing. For this reason, MTB Plastering tend to choose plaster over plasterboard in most jobs where possible to ensure each project remains in top condition for a longer period of time!

Wet plaster requires much more skill to mix and apply which is why it is recommended to make sure wet plaster is applied by a professional local plasterer.

Plasterboard – The Advantages and Disadvantages

Whilst wet plaster can have its benefits, so can plasterboard. Plasterboard is often a much quicker material to install as it is made from ready-made pre-cut sheets that can be quickly erected onto a wall. Additionally, plasterboard does not have a drying period and can be worked on almost instantly when put up.

Plasterboard can also be a lot more affordable than traditional plaster, but is heavily limited in where it can be used due to its shape. Plasterboard can be cut to shape, but this can lead to a potential less airtight seal.

Plasterboard is also known for not having anywhere near as much sound proofing as regular plaster meaning it is not always suited for every property. As a plasterer in Shrewsbury, we will try to use traditional wet plaster where possible to ensure a long-standing plastered wall with greater durability and sound proofing for your home.
